Things you should know about the haste breakpoints (I plan to expand on this later)

  • Extra Lifebloom ticks are actually really good, because basically it means that your chances to proc clearcasting increase (each LB tick has a 4% chance to proc). However, shooting for an extra 1700 haste means that you’re likely to be sacrificing approximately the same in mastery/crit, which means it’s not worthwhile to go out of your way for it.
  • Dark Intent changed in Mists of Pandaria and is no longer a targetable 5% haste buff. Everyone gets the 5% haste buff from boomkins, shadow priests and/or ele shamans (i.e. any caster DPS who gets hit from spirit).
  • 8th tick of Wild Growth is the absolute minimum I think is required for raiding. With the 5% haste buff, it is ridiculously easy to obtain, and you should focus on mastery and crit instead of haste. Do this until it’s reasonable to attain a 5th tick of Tranquility (i.e. without sacrificing spirit).
  • Disregarding Soul of the Forest & Blooming, you’ll probably want to maintain 12.52% haste for a long time – 37.52% is the next really special breakpoint. You can comfortably hit 37.52% haste in the right normal mode Siege of Orgrimmar gear, but do remember that to do so you will normally lose quite a bit of mastery. “Stretching” to hit a higher haste breakpoint can also be difficult to maintain if you are only just able to make it – you might get a fantastic would-be upgrade that you can’t equip because it doesn’t have haste.
  • I often see people saying that increased haste means increased mana consumption and that this is a drawback. This thinking is incorrect. The amount of healing that can be done is capped by the amount of damage taken in an encounter. If you are casting additional heals as a result of your higher haste but not healing for any more than before, that means you’re being wasteful. The other possibility is that you are casting additional heals, your throughput is increasing, and you are healing a greater percentage of the incoming damage. This is exactly what you want to happen though.
