Gon’ own a server

So today, Blizzard announced that they would be auctioning off their old servers for charity in the next few weeks.

I’m really keen to try to pick one up (the Blackrock one preferred, as it has been my home server since the launch of BC, but honestly I’ll take whichever I can get). My chances are outrageously slim and I can only speculate on price.

They are clearly display only, so the assumption has to be made that they won’t work, therefore there’s no reason to compare them to the price of other second hand servers that you might find for use as a small business or student undertaking Cisco certification. There are also a lot (like, one for each US and EU realm) which means that supply might be a factor in keeping prices down… Sort of.

On the other hand, Blizzard have taken measures to ensure that these are presented very nicely for display, and there are plenty of collectors out there, so the value may be up there in terms of collection value. The size of the blades might just be what kills it for me – I’m going to have to pay international shipping. I’ve worked out what I’m prepared to pay, but I have a feeling I might be forking out $100-200 in postage just to get it here, which could break the budget. Fingers crossed I can make it happen!

If I don’t pick one up, I hope at least they all sell for a tonne!

Anyway, good on Blizzard for coming up with a pretty awesome way of handling their e-waste, especially when it’s as significant as the┬áservers. They are pretty good with their charity efforts, but this is particularly creative, and I hope they do more like this in years to come, especially after I graduate and can afford to drop the money on such things.
